Found the following in a website. Good info, however the server they were playing on didn't start you out with your own planet. Soooo... you have to throw that into the mix as well as for what to do at the beginning. This is far from being the last word in TradeWars strategy. It is designed to help...

The above post is old, was posted back in 2006, but all the info on how to connect should be the same. I have attached the program GATH to this post above and also a TradeWars 2002 help file. Will help explain the basics of the game. CURRENT MAIN GAME IP AND PORT: 166.251.94.232 Port 23

Like I said, you don't need to memorize the commands. You can always hit ? in the game to see what you can do. The main commands you use, you will get to know them after doing them over and over. It's a pretty sweet game though. Plus it's free. :) The more people that play the funner and more...

The assault is on! I'm grinding away at the Swarm's home sector, 9391. If you want to help out, I recommend that you bring a Guardian with at least 100k fighters. I'm staging in 5263. You might see one of my planets in there -- just don't try to land on it and it won't bother you.

This is interesting... The daily trading values are based on the day of the week. Monday the range is 0-5 (bad trading day), Tuesday is 7-7, Wednesday 10-11, Thursday 9-9, Friday 11-12, Saturday 11-14, and Sunday 10-12.
